Happy 200th, Mr. Dickens!

"A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other." ~ Charles Dickens

Yes, it's the 200th Birthday of Mr. Charles Dickens, and the quote above is just one of thousands that illustrate why he remains such a literary treasure. He was not only a prolific and profound writer, but a man of conscience and a deep thinker. He made sure his stories entertained and enlightened us. He challenged the status quo by illustrating in great detail some of the most horrific social injustices of his time, and he also showed the power of compassion and love to appeal to our better nature, which can lead to positive change.

We could take a page or two from Mr. Dickens today--literally. While most of us will never achieve his mastery of the English language, we can strive to equal his verve and conviction. We can speak out about injustices in both clear and clever ways, and find ways to work together to make this world a more beautiful place.

So, here's to you, Mr. Dickens. Happy Birthday! Wish you were here to celebrate with us, and to use your wit and wisdom to address our ills and inspire hope. Cheers!

"An idea, like a ghost, must be spoken to a little before it will explain itself." ~ Dickens
